Volunteers wanted

The Friends of Birkenhead Park are looking for volunteers to get involved with their work during a special event next month.

The group is holding a volunteering day at Edward Kemp Community Garden and Growing Area on Ashville Road in Birkenhead on June 5 from 10.30am until 3pm.

The Edward Kemp Community Garden is described as providing a health and well-being setting for a wide variety of Community Groups. It a place where members of the community can grow their own food, take part in physical activities and learn about the environment as well as participating in social activities.

Groups include members of the Muslim, Chinese, Romanian Communities as well as organisations such as Grow Well-being, Journeymen, Salvation Army, Claremont School  and Support2Independence.

A spokesperson for The Friends of Birkenhead Park said: "We are looking for a small group of volunteers to carry out a number of jobs at the Garden.

"The front border of the Garden is located on the path side and we have over the years managed, with help from some of Liverpool John Moores University students to clear an area and planted it with some wonderful flowers.

"We are now looking for help to clear a further area of the border to then replant it with some bee friendly flowers and bulbs.

"As well as this we have accumulated a large soil bank in our compost area and we are looking to remove some of the re-usable soil to build a landscape mound by our pond area.

"The bank will be seeded with wildflower seeds and a small area of the bund will be used for planting out courgettes which love that sort of environment."

If you are interested in helping out at the garden on June 5, the advice is to wear suitable footwear and gloves if you have them. Refreshments will be provided on the day.

If you are able to help, contact  Sheila on admin@fbp.org.uk, text 07891977337.
