NEW data shows which areas of tWirral have the highest rates of fly tipping and dog fouling.
Data from April 14 2023 to March 26 2024 show there were 3628 reports of fly tipping across the borough and 373 reports of dog fouling from people not clearing after their pets. Between April and March, more than 1,000 fewer streets were cleaned with 1,415 street cleansing activities carried out compared to 2,446 the previous year.
Dog fouling has seen an increase in the last year. There were 336 reports between April 2022 and March 2023 but there were 373 the following year. Flytipping reports have stayed largely the same with 3768 reports between April 2023 and March 2024, a decrease of one compared to the previous year according to the council data.
In 2023, Wirral Council looked to crack down more on these crimes as well as litter by passing plans to bring in a new environmental enforcement scheme carried out by a contractor. This was expected to raise £150,000 for the council following “increasing levels of environmental crime.”
However, data published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs showed no fines were issues for any flytipping incidents between April 2022 and March 2023. Despite investigating 2,488 incidents, only three warning letters were issued by the council.
The new data also shows some areas are more heavily impacted with the highest reports of flytipping in the council wards of Birkenhead and Tranmere, Rock Ferry, Seacombe, Bidston and St James. Birkenhead and Tranmere was the highest for dog fouling reports with 47 over the year.
However, some places see far fewer incidents of flytipping. In Heswall, there were only 16 reports with West Kirby, Wallasey, Pensby and Thingwall, Moreton West and Saughall Massie, Greasby, Frankby and Irby, and Estham also seeing lower numbers.
Every area with over 100 reports of fly tipping was located in the east of the borough in more densely populated areas such as Birkenhead, Bebington, and Wallasey.
Wirral Council were approached for comment.
