A football match organised by a Wirral school as part of its centenary year celebrations has raised more than £1000 for charity.

The inter-schools centenary game was organised by West Kirby School and College, whose staff took on a team from Claremount Specialist Sports College.

It took place on the pitch at Tranmere Rovers Prenton Park ground and raised £1100 for Save the Children.

The game was played by staff teams, together with guest legends including Joe Murphy of Tranmere Rovers. Pupils, families and staff of both schools cheered the teams on and the atmosphere was one of real community spirit.

After a spirited match, with a 6-0 win to Claremount, a cup was presented to the winners by Anthony Shone, President of West Kirby Educational Trust.

Ticket sales were a fundraiser for Save The Children, the nominated international charity by pupils of West Kirby School and College, £1100 raised in total.

First Team Tranmere Rovers player and goalkeeping coach Joe Murphy presented a cheque to Lesley, Save the Children UK local representative.

Lesley Crombie, representative of Save the Children, attended the game and said afterwards: “This is an amazing amount of money.

"This donation will contribute to our Emergency Fund, which is used by Save the Children to support disasters that occur in this country and abroad, particularly Ukraine, Gaze, Somalia and Yemen, as well as everyday use in the UK.

"Thank you so much."

Dan Keefe, deputy headteacher at Claremount Specialist Sports College said: "It was a brilliant experience to play on the pitch at Prenton Park against WKS and help them celebrate their centenary year.

"The game was played in a great spirit which brought our two school communities together, including staff on the field as well as pupils and parents spectating. Hopefully this can be the start of an annual fixture. Congratulations on 100 years".

Sian Thomas, headteacher and chief executive of West Kirby School, a big advocate for community relations and putting the school value ‘Be Kind’ into action, said: "It was a real family event and an absolutely enjoyable evening.

"The end result was that £1100 was raised for Save The Children. It was amazing."

The organisers of the events and the two schools sincerely thank Tranmere Rovers FC for their warm hospitality and excellent organisation, which made the event such a success.
