A 62-year-old military veteran is preparing to sleep rough over the May bank holiday, raising funds for The Royal British Legion along the Wirral Way.

Freddie Wing, a mobility scooter user from Ellesmere Port, hopes that people enjoying the bank holiday will lend their support to his cause.

Mr Wing recently raised over £300 by participating in a sleep-out challenge, bringing attention to the issue of homelessness among veterans — currently estimated at around 6,000 individuals.

This previous challenge saw Mr Wing well-wished by Justin Madders, MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston.

Once an active serviceman who travelled to places like Canada, Iceland, and Berlin, Mr Wing is now a dedicated supporter of the Royal British Legion in Little Sutton.

His upcoming challenge will commence at around 2.30pm on Friday in Heath Lane, Little Sutton.

Mr Wing hopes to receive a police escort across Welsh Road, from where he will continue his journey down the Wirral Way, finally stopping at the Boathouse pub in Parkgate.

There, he will be offered a meal and have the opportunity to charge his mobility scooter.

Saturday morning will see Mr Wing travel from his pitching spot to retrieve his scooter from the Boathouse and resume his journey to West Kirby.

He will then return to Heswall's Royal British Legion to pitch his tent and recharge his scooter.

Around 11am on Sunday, Mr Wing who will be in his military clothing, will head to Thurstaston Visitor Centre, where a coincidentally planned football tournament and it will offer him a chance to meet more people.

Sunday night will be spent at the centre after pitching his tent.

On Bank Holiday Monday, Mr Wing aims to meet up with supporters at the RBL in Little Sutton once he again crosses Welsh Road safely.

In a show of fervour, Mr Wing has already collected more than £160 for the cause during shopping trips at Cheshire Oaks.

Looking into the future, Mr Wing also plans to participate in D-Day Landings celebrations on Thursday, June 6, marking its 80th year anniversary.
