A FIVE-star youth hostel which is located at the foot of Yr Wyddfa has won a prestigious award.
YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass, in Caernarfon, is celebrating after being named Hostelworld’s Best Hostel in Wales in 2024. The winner was revealed following an international public vote.
Now in their 22nd year, the annual HOSCAR (Hostelworld Customer Annual Ratings) awards recognise the very best youth hostels across the globe.
YHA Snowdon-Pen-y-Pass joins 132 other youth hostels that have been named the best in their respective countries. Other winners include Balmers Hostel in Switzerland, Mango Mansion in Puerto Rico, Octopus Resort in Fiji, and Paradise Garden in Namibia.
Abigail Freeman, manager of YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass, said: “The team and I are delighted to win the award. It is fantastic to be recognised in the HOSCARS; they are the ultimate awards when it comes to youth hostels and travel.
“We welcome thousands of guests each year to the hostel, from Wales, England and internationally.
"We hope our latest accolade will bring us to the attention of even more people and that they will visit our wonderful youth hostel in this beautiful part of the world and experience our warm Welsh welcome.”
With the exception of Antartica, youth hostels can be found on every continent of the globe. They have offered affordable accommodation to individuals, families and groups throughout the world since the Youth Hostels Association was founded in Germany in 1909.

YHA was established in England and Wales in 1930 with the first hostels in Wales opening the same year.
YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass has been owned and operated by YHA (England & Wales), a leading youth and travel charity, since 1968. Today, YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass is one of 23 hostels in Wales - approximately 15 per cent of the charity's network.
YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass recently unveiled a bilingual display in its reception. Funded by the Cronfa Cymunedau Eryri Communities Fund (CCE), the display promotes sustainable tourism by sharing information on lesser-known local walking routes, places to visit, and local communities, as well as advice on how to enjoy activities in Eryri National Park responsibly.
In addition to the display, YHA has funded and installed new bilingual wayfinding signage at the youth hostels.
