THE council have confirmed that clean up arrangements are “underway” after Wirral was hit battered by strong winds and flooding yesterday (Tuesday, April 9).

The borough faced stormy weather as gusts and high tides coincided causing flooding and disruption to several areas.

A yellow weather warning was issued by the Met Office which came into force from 1am and lasted until 3pm.

The Environment Agency issued a flood warning for New Brighton – covering Marine Point, Kings Parade and Marine Promenade areas with flood alerts covering other parts of New Brighton, West Kirby Rock Park and Meols Parade.

Staff members had to be saved from Tanskeys Bistro in West Kirby by a lifeboat crew after a high tide completely flooded the South Parade.

The flooding caused by water from waves crashing against the newly formed West Kirby sea wall caused damage to properties, moving cars, and trapping people inside their homes.

Wirral Council have since confirmed that a clean up was “underway” to clear debris from along the coast and that damage caused to seating along the prom areas were being made safe.

A Wirral Council spokesperson said: “So after a day of pretty grim weather, inspections have highlighted a fair bit of debris along the coast and clean-up arrangements are underway in those areas.

“There’s also some damage to seating along prom areas which is being made safe, and surface water at West Kirby is slowly draining away.

“The wall at West Kirby was designed to reduce the worst effects of flooding and minimise damage, but we’ll be assessing things with the Environment Agency and keep you updated.

“Lastly on flooding, Brimstage Road is now open but Brimstage Lane will stay closed until tomorrow.

“Elsewhere, some coastal bin collections including Hoylake and Meols were affected, so if yours was missed please leave your bin out for collection tomorrow.

“The weather also brought a few trees down in Claughton and Eastham but if you see a damaged tree along the highway that looks at risk of falling, please call 0151 606 2004 (9am-5pm, Mon-Fri) or 0151 647 7810 (out of hours).

“Those numbers can be used to report any other issues.”
