A STAND-UP comedy night for a charity supporting Wirral people with learning disabilities has raised thousands of pounds.

The event, which took place at Tranmere Rovers' Prenton Park on Thursday, March 28, has so far boosted Wirral Mencap's funds by £2,072.42, with more money due to come in from the performers’ sponsorship.

The grand total will be revealed on the charity social media in the coming weeks..

The comedy night has become, with the exception of the pandemic, an annual tradition for the charity.

For several weeks, seven budding comedians have been breaking out their funny bones and brushing up on their stand-up routines to put on an unforgettable performance for an audience of supporters. When the big day came, it was clear to see that all the hard work had paid off.

Performing to a sold-out audience, the group of comedians put on a brilliant show and had the crowd laughing all night. From classic one-liners to carefully crafted stories, there was something for everyone.

The winner of the night, Wirral Mencap’s very own Ben Duggan, had this to say: "The Comedy Night was an amazing experience and not just because I won! The whole process was enjoyable, challenging, and scary.

"Meeting six people who I had never met before and seeing us all put so much effort in and then to deliver a fantastic night of comedy created a bond.

"We are all still in conversation and plan to do some open mic nights together in the future! Jack Miller, the comedian from the Comedy Trust, was brilliant all the way through! An experience I won't forget in a hurry, bucket list ticked!"

Wirral Mencap’s Fundraiser, Becca Chapman was thrilled with the success of the night: "Our performers did a brilliant job, despite nerves running high, and provided us with a full night of entertainment. A big well done to them. We are delighted with the success of the night.

"The money raised will go towards continuing the vital support that Wirral Mencap provides for local adults with a learning disability."

Wirral Mencap supports people with a learning disability by:

  • Listening to and working with individuals and organisations to achieve maximum impact.
  • Challenging attitudes, perceptions, and ways of working to ensure that people with a learning disability and their families are treated with dignity and respect.
  • Providing the information and tools they need to succeed and inspire them to reach their true potential, whatever that may be.
