The man was restrained by a customer in the store before officers arrived and detained him.

Merseyside Police confirmed that nobody was injured during the incident.

A 57-year-old man from Wallasey was arrested on suspicion of robbery and has been taken to a police station for questioning.

Detective Inspector Andrew Schofield said: “One man is in custody and we are continuing to make enquiries. We particularly want to identify any more potential witnesses who were in the shop or nearby at the time.

“This will have been a shocking incident to witness for staff and customers alike, and we’d urge anyone who was in the area and saw or captured anything to come forward.
