A PUB in Birkenhead has been temporarily closed and had its licence suspended after reports of fights and gun crime.

Merseyside Police requested a review of The Monkey’s Nuts, on Market Street, and the first stage of a hearing took place on Thursday, April 4 at Birkenhead Town Hall when the licence was immediately suspended by Wirral Council.

Merseyside Police took the action following recent reports of serious crime and disorder, which included a firearms incident on Thursday, March 28, 2024.

At around 7.10pm, there was a brawl involving a group of men outside the premises and during the incident it was reported that a male was in possession of a reported firearm.

There were no reports that a firearm was discharged.

Following an investigation, David Hughes, 27, of Market Street, was arrested and charged with possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and possessing an offensive weapon in a private place.

The second stage of the licence review will take place on Tuesday, April 30.
