A CAMPAIGN has been launched for volunteers to help manage the allotments at Wirral's hugely popular Tam O'Shanter's farm.

Spring has well and truly sprung at the Bidston-based attraction and rainy days and warm temperatures have caused a sudden growth spurt of greenery everywhere.

In its nursery polytunnel, the seeds have all sprouted, the tomato plants have grown and some have even flowered.

Treasurer and Trustee of Tam O’Shanter Cottage Urban Farm Trust, Jo Wood MBE, said: "We are looking for people who want to help us farm our allotments this year and help us yield a great harvest that will feed our animals and produce fruit and veg to sell on to the public.

"As members of the Gardeners Club, you will be part of a team that helps us reap the rewards of the soil.

Jo added: "We are ready now to accept members who want to come and dig in some manure to get the beds ready, clean the sides of the tunnels, weed the old beds, and start to get the tomato pots ready for planting out."

The farm has recently achieved funding for an irrigation system in its lower polytunnel on the allotment site and need volunteers to come and install it for us. It is believed this will cut down on the need for endless watering in the summer months.

Tam O’Shanter Farm aims to remain free access to all and is supported by public donations. They are keen to encourage all forms of volunteering and seek to engage with people who have time to spare and who want to get involved in maintenance, horticulture, site management, shop sales and events, education programmes – as well as animal care and husbandry.
