THE Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team is asking residents to exercise “extreme caution” ahead of a weather warning that will see high tides and strong winds coincide.

A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office as strong winds are expected to bring “hazardous conditions” to Wirral’s coast from 1am tomorrow (Tuesday, April 9) until 3pm.

The Coastguard has since issued a warning to people as the high tide and strongest winds are expected to overlap.

A statement from the team read: “The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for tomorrow (Tuesday 9th) with strong winds all along the Welsh, Merseyside and Lancashire coasts from 01:00 until 15:00.

“The current forecast is showing that the high tide of 10.21 metres at 12:20 pm coincides with the strongest winds at 32knots (37 mph) average speed with gusts which are expected to reach over 45 knots (52mph).

“The wind starts from a southerly direction but in the early hours changes to westerly and then is expected north westerly to coincide with high tide time.

“The result of this could mean that with the wind blowing onshore, the wave heights and swell energy generated will likely cause overtopping around coastal paths and marine lakes.

“Again, we are asking people to exercise extreme caution if near the coast and where possible stay well away from the water’s edge. Don’t risk it for a photo.

“We would rather not have to risk the lives of our brave local RNLI crews RNLI Hoylake Lifeboat Station, RNLI West Kirby Lifeboat, RNLI New Brighton Lifeboat Station and RNLI Wirral Lifeguards.

“Please Dial 999 and ask for The Coastguard if you need help in an emergency or you see anyone else in difficulty on the coast.”
