A WREXHAM AFC fan who called opposing supporters "English b*******" has been banned from attending matches.

Daniel Thomas Monk, of Moss Valley Brow, New Broughton, appeared before Wrexham Magistrates Court on Tuesday (April 2).

The 21-year-old admitted a racially aggravated public order offence that occurred on March 16.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, said that the incident occurred on the day of Wrexham AFC's home match against Tranmere Rovers. Mr Espie said police deem it a "high risk" match, after over 30 hooligans were jailed following large-scale disorder when the two clubs met in 2003.

The court heard that Tranmere Rovers fans were being escorted by the police along Crispin Lane when Monk approached a police line separating the two sets of rival fans. Monk was heard calling the Tranmere fans "dirty Scouse "b*******".

Police body worn footage showed that Monk, who had no previous convictions, then returned with a group of other men, at which point he shouts at the Tranmere fans, calling them "dirty English b*******". Monk, who works as a chef at Maesgwyn Hall and the Fat Boar, was then arrested at the scene.

Alex McKenzie, defending, said that Monk is "genuinely very sorry" for his "out of character" behaviour, and regrets sliding in to the use of a racist insult. She added that Monk was part of a larger group shouting similar things, and that insults were being returned by some of the opposing fans.

Monk was banned from attending football matches for a period of three years. He was also fined £768.
