THE future of the site of a disused pub earmarked for a new housing development has been revealed.

Last week, the Warrington Guardian reported that plans to demolish The Sportsman Arms in Penketh to make way for new apartments had been approved.

Now, detailed plans for the redevelopment of the Warrington Road site have been shared.

Churchill Retirement Living will be building 56 new independent living retirement apartments, bringing a ‘thriving’ community to the area.

Residents, who will be over 60s, will enjoy independent living and a sense of community with a communal lounge, a guest suite, a lodge manager, and a 24-hour emergency call alarm service.

Developers say that the scheme will contribute £435,000 a year to the local economy and support around seven new jobs.

The initial plans were met with objections but planning inspectors dismissed these due to the ‘considerable benefits’ the scheme will bring to the town.

Adam Mooij, managing director of Churchill’s Northern Region which is based in Warrington, said: “This is a very positive result and we will now look forward to starting work on this new development in Penketh.

"Retirement housing is shown to be the most effective form of residential development for generating local economic growth, supporting local jobs, and increasing high street spend.

“The new apartments will also help improve the health and wellbeing of those who live there, and meet the housing needs of many older people in Penketh and the surrounding area.”
