A stand-up comedy night for a charity supporting Wirral people with learning disabilities takes place next week.

Proceeds from the event, in the Prentonian Suite at Tranmere Rovers' Prenton Park ground on Thursday, March 28, will go to Wirral Mencap. It starts at 7pm.

The comedy night has become, with the exception of the pandemic, an annual tradition for the charity.

Taking part are members of the public with no stand-up experience who volunteered to attend several workshops led by professional comedian, Jack Miller from the Comedy Trust, Liverpool, and work on their routine.

At the end of this ‘training’, they perform in front of a live audience who will then get the chance to vote for who they think the best stand-up is.

Tickets, £15, can be bought at Wirral Mencap's office on Market Street in Birkenhead or via the following link: https://buytickets.at/wirralmencap/1145099.

Sharon Nicholson, the charity's chief executive said: "Last year Wirral Mencap celebrated its 60th anniversary and we invited previous Wirral Mencap Comedy Night participants back for a Legends rerun of this hugely popular event.

"This is the first ‘novice’ Comedy Night Challenge we’ve had since the pandemic.

"We are delighted to have it back on our fundraising events calendar. You have got to admire these ‘newbies’ supporting the charity.

"That’s what you call going above and beyond to raise vital funds for Wirral Mencap."

Becca Chapman, fundraiser for Wirral Mencap, revealed that one of this year's participants is Wirral Mencap’s very own programmes and gateway manager, Ben Duggan.

She said: "I’ve got to say, he’s very brave. Of course, he wants to challenge himself, but Ben also knows first-hand how important it is to raise funds towards continuing the vital support that Wirral Mencap provides for people with a learning disability on the Wirral.

"The whole Wirral Mencap staff team will be there to cheer Ben on. AND, of course, all the other amazing budding comedians who are taking part this year"
