"Armed officers closed off the area and have now arrested a 22-year-old man from Birkenhead on suspicion of possession of a suspected firearm, criminal damage and affray.

"Alexandra Road and Grange Mount is now reopened. Thank you for your patience whilst we dealt with this incident."

An eye witness, who contacted the Globe, but did not want to be named, said: "Police arrived around 2am this morning and there was a man smashing windows in a flat.

"Armed police are still there talking him out."

Another said: "Armed police are in the road as someone in a flat, possibly 17 or 19, has a gun.

"We've been told to stay away from windows and stay indoors."
