A “bin bag full of foam” was mistaken for a person stuck in the mud in Egremont.

Rescue crews were called out at 6.51pm on Sunday (March 10) to reports of a person possibly stuck in the mud at the end of Manor Rock Armour Groyne in Egremont.

Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team members arrived at Manor Groyne and spoke with members of the public on the promenade.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service and Marine Fire One rescue boat also attended and firefighters started to kit up for mud rescue.

Firefighters entered the mud to assess if it was a person and retrieved a large bin bag full of foam.

A spokesperson for Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team said: “The plan was for fire crews to go onto the mud and assess if it was a person, Coastguard would assist by setting up a recovery system.

“Thankfully the item was located and confirmed to be a large plastic bag full of foam. This was recovered off the beach to be disposed of to stop any pollution for marine life.”

After being washed down, crews left the scene at 7.25pm.
