PART of the M53 motorway is closed due to a lorry crash causing an oil spill.

The M53 is closed northbound between Junction 9 Ellesmere Port and Junction 8 due to a collision involving a lorry and a tipper truck.

As a result of the crash, one of the HGV’s has overturned and is leaking oil onto the carriageway.

The incident happened at around 10.27am.

North West Motorway Police and National Highways are at the scene.

National Highways confirmed the closure was an “ongoing incident” and that drivers should expect delays while a diversion route is being established.

North West Motorway Police have advised drivers to follow the hollow square for the diversion route.
