A SCHOOL in Wirral has been forced to close after a power cut hit the area today (Thursday, January 18).

Scottish Power said the issue was reported to them shortly before 7am this morning, Thursday.

One power cut is affecting properties on Farndon Avenue, Cheltenham Road, Sandy Lane and other surrounding streets in Wallasey Village.

A power cut also affected the Bebington area overnight and this morning.

In a statement on social media, St John Plessington Catholic College, in Bebington, has confirmed they have had to close due to "the safety and welfare of the staff and students".

The statement continued: "Can I take this opportunity to congratulate our pupils on their calm and orderly exit from the building today, which was reflective of our core values, Pride, Respect and Determination.

"Whilst at home for the remainder of the day, pupils should log onto their google classrooms, where staff will provide them with work to complete and be on hand to assist should your child require support.

"We currently have engineers working to resolve the issues. Once we have further clarification on the situation I will write this afternoon to confirm arrangements for Friday.

"Phone lines remain down and therefore I would encourage any urgent correspondence to be sent to schooloffice@stjohnplessington.com and we will do our best to respond as quickly as possible."

It is expected power will be restored by 2pm.

A Scottish Power statement said: "We are aware of a fault in your area.
