THERE were long queues on the M53 this afternoon (Thursday, January 11) after a crash left a person "trapped" in a car.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service attended the scene on the M53 Southbound between junction 3 and junction 4, along with North West Ambulance Service (NWAS), Merseyside Police and the Highways Agency.

Fire crews were alerted at 11.36am and two fire engines and the search and rescue team were on scene shortly after.

On arrival, crews found two vehicles involved in a road traffic collision (RTC), both were on all four wheels.

Almost all occupants were out of their vehicles prior to crews’ arrival, other than one who remains trapped.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service said: "Crews liaised with NWAS to form a plan to extract the trapped occupant and work is currently being done to remove the doors of the vehicle.

"Merseyside Police closed three lanes of the southbound carriageway while the incident was ongoing."

The road has now re-opened.
