BUS company Arriva has confirmed the 420 bus route from West Kirby to Liverpool will be scrapped this month.

Today (Tuesday, January 9) Arriva confirmed that they are making changes to their bus services across Merseyside and the North West from January 21.

There will be changes to some routes and timetables, with some services enhanced to meet new levels of demand but also some reductions where demand has fallen and some general timetable changes.

In these changes, it has been confirmed that service 420, West Kirby to Liverpool will have its last day of operation on Friday, January 19.

This is due to a "gradual decline in passenger numbers through the pandemic and diminishing levels of funding".

Arriva proposed to cut the 420 and 418 bus routes in November.

MP for Birkenhead Mick Whitley wrote a letter to Arriva following the announcement about the 418 route being cut.

Mr Whitley explained that the route "provides a vital service to communities in the north of Birkenhead including the only direct route to Arrowe Park".

In December, it was confirmed the 418 route would continue until April due to financial support provided by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority while options are considered going forward.

In the published changes it has also been confirmed services 432, 433 and 437, New Brighton/West Kirby to Liverpool will be re-routed.

Cook Street will be omitted in Liverpool City centre on Saturday and Sunday after 9am.

Instead, services will terminate at Whitechapel and start at Sir Thomas Street.

A spokesperson for Arriva North West said: “After operation on Friday, January 19, 2024 service 420 will be withdrawn.

"Service 420 offers one Monday to Friday journey from West Kirby to Liverpool, so customers are advised to use service 437 which operates every 10 minutes between West Kirby and Liverpool.

"Customers in Upton can either board the 437 service at Tinas Way or catch service 414 to Birkenhead bus station and change onto any CrossRiver service.

"We always review our routes to make sure we provide our customers with the best service we can, while making sure we’re able to continue operating a stable bus network in the longer term."
