In 2023 several shops joined the growing list of iconic stores that have closed in Wirral.

Here is a list of some of the most notable store closures in Wirral this year.

1. Wilko

Birkenhead and Liscard took a major blow in 2023 losing their Wilko stores.

The hardware and furnishings retailer tumbled into administration in August after it came under pressure from weak consumer spending and debts to suppliers.

Liscard's store in the Cherry Tree Shopping Centre, closed to customers on Thursday, September 28.

Birkenhead's shop at The Europa Centre, closed for good on October 8, following the retailer’s administration.

2. Argos

Argos confirmed its Birkenhead store was closing its doors for good on Wednesday, March 22.

The branch in Pyramids Shopping Centre was among 50 of the company's stores to shut in 2023 following a deal with Sainsbury's.

It was understood that number of staff at the branch were made redundant, with some redeployed to other roles across Argos and Sainsbury’s.

The closures were part of its partner company's new strategy which involves closing 420 standalone stores over three-and-a-half years.

3. Iceland

Iceland closed their store in Birkenhead in September this year.

The shop, on Grange Rd, next to Pyramids Shopping Centre, closed for good on September 16.

Richard Walker, Executive Chairman of Iceland Foods, said: "Across Iceland and The Food Warehouse we have a portfolio of over UK 1,000 stores, and our retail estate has grown by nearly 200 stores over the last ten years. We typically open more than 20 new stores each year, creating many new jobs and contributing to the growth of local economies.

"At the same time, we continually review the retail experience offered to our customers and have always made a small number of store closures every year, as local shopping patterns change and shop leases expire. The business is currently trading very strongly, achieving record market shares. Customers can find their closest Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores here."

4. H&M

H&M confirmed the closure of their last remaining Wirral store earlier this month.

The store, located at The Croft Retail Park in Bromborough closed for good on Saturday, December 23.
