AN independent film featuring a Tranmere Rovers supporter has won two awards.

Our Kid picked up the honours for 'Best feature Film' and 'Best Actor' at the Birmingham Festival awards on Saturday night.

The film follows the Reillys, a working-class family who learn to deal with adversity through humour.

Among the family is 12-year-old Laura, whose goal in life is to one day play football professionally. Laura has many footballing heroes, but it’s her older brother Thomas, a Tranmere Rovers super fan, who’s her biggest hero.

His inspirational quest to raise money for charity through a sponsored bike ride, while overcoming the challenges he faces from his cerebral palsy, shows Laura and the rest of the community what determination and perseverance can achieve.

On the film's success at the Birmingham Film Festival  Daniel - who won the 'Best actor' award - told the Globe: "I'm still overwhelmed the fact we completed our film, released it and getting such an amazing response from everyone. Now to say our little film is an award-winner is amazing.

"We were so grateful to be selected at the Birmingham Film Festival but to receive five nominations was fantastic.

"For me to win 'Best Actor' was first and foremost a shock as I know the competition was great. However so unbelievably grateful and happy that my performance is being received well, since it's a character/story so close to my heart."

He continued: "I refuse to accept sole credit for the award because without the amazing cast and director helping bring the best out of not only me but each other then I wouldn't have this award.

"To go on and win 'Best Feature Film' was unbelievable and very emotional for me personally.

"Each and every cast and crew member deserves this award. I was happy to give the award to my little sister Poppie Jae Hughes as she is "Our Kid".
