THERE have been many much-loved pubs in Wirral which have sadly shut down over the years.
And this looks set to continue with the pub industry facing many difficulties recently from Covid-19 to the cost of living crisis.
We asked Globe readers which Wirral pubs they miss most and here is a list of what people said:
The Pelican
The Pelican on Houghton Road in Woodchurch opened in November 1957.
It was a West Cheshire Brewery pub at the time and traded into the 1980s. It was then closed and demolished.
The Pacific
The Pacific was located on Price Street in Birkenhead and operated from 1878 to around 2009.
According to WhatPub in 1990 it was described as a live music pub with almost club hours.
It was put up for sale in 2012.
The Central Hotel
The Central Hotel on Clifton Crescent in Birkenhead town centre opened on March 20, 1939. The hotel had a full pub licence and sold real ale from the bar at various times in the 1980s and 1990s.
It closed in 2013 and was up for sale but was then damaged by a fire in 2016.
The Stirrup
The Stirrup was located on Arrowe Park Road in Upton and opened in November 1966.
It closed in November 2019 and was demolished in July 2020, and a plan to convert the pub into retirement homes was rejected in 2021.
The Archers
The Archers in Mark Rake, Bromborough opened in 1957.
It had a separate public bar with darts and pool. It was closed by 2013.
Abbotsford
The Abbotsford pub was located in Rock Ferry on the New Chester Road and opened in 1967 but closed in the 1990s.
The building was demolished in 2013 and the site was redeveloped for housing.
