A MOTORIST'S "momentary lapse of concentration" left a motorbike rider with serious injuries after a collision on the A41 in Ellesmere Port.

Alan Loyden, 73, was returning home on Glenwood Road, Little Sutton at 8pm on April 15 when the crash happened between his Peugeot and the Harley Davidson motorcycle ridden by the victim, Russell Campbell.

Loyden pleaded guilty at the first opportunity on Tuesday, October 3 at Chester Magistrates Court to causing serious injury by careless driving.

The case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be obtained.

Prosecuting, Lisa McGuire said Loyden did not indicate and turned into the side of the motorbike.

Mr Campbell was left with multiple fractures to his right ankle and foot, the latter which became infected and required intravenous antibiotics, plus the insertion of pins. In addition, there was an open wound on the left leg and his left shoulder was injured.

Loyden had no previous convictions.

Defending, Wendy Shurrock said: "This is a difficult matter to consider," adding that it was a "momentary lapse of concentration" which Loyden took responsibility for, and came over to the motorcyclist immediately after the collision to apologise and check on him.

The court heard Loyden did not have any issues with drink or drugs in his system.

Chair of magistrates Mark Johns told Loyden: "The consequences of this collision have been particularly horrific for the victim. We accept you are 73 and are of previous good character, and accept your guilty plea."

A pre-sentence report will be obtained and Loyden will be sentenced on November 1. The defendant received an interim driving ban.
