FORMER Tranmere footballer Pat Nevin has confirmed an appearance at The Liverpool Literary Festival later this year.

The popular pundit and writer will be joined by Anthony Quinn, author of Klopp: My Liverpool Romance, for a lively discussion on the beautiful game at the University of Liverpool on Sunday, October 18 at 5.30pm.

Nevin is a Scottish former football star who represented his country and played for Everton, Tranmere Rovers and Chelsea in the 1980s and 1990s. He has since built a successful career as a broadcaster and author.

His memoir, Sunday Times best seller, The Accidental Footballer, about his young life and then his time as a player until he left Everton, received great critical acclaim. Nevin's latest book Football And How To Survive It was released earlier this year.

Liverpool-born Anthony Quinn was film critic of the Independent for 15 years. An award-winning author, his football memoir Klopp was released in 2020. A film adaptation of his novel Curtain Call is due for release later this year, starring Ian McKellen and Gemma Arterton.

Speaking about his appearance at the Festival, Nevin, said: “I’m really looking forward to the Liverpool Literary Festival at the University of Liverpool. My previous book The Accidental Footballer was incredibly well received in the city, not least because of the sections on my time at Everton FC.

“At the Festival I’ll be talking about my latest book, Football and How to Survive it, providing a detailed account of my time over the river at Tranmere Rovers along with inside information regarding my time as PFA Chairman in England, player at Kilmarnock in Scotland and the mayhem of being both player and Chief Executive at Motherwell in the Scottish Premier League.  I’ll also tell my very personal story of what it’s like being an outsider inside the extraordinary industry that is football!

Anthony Quinn added: “I'm thrilled at the prospect of meeting Pat Nevin, whose silky skills and nifty wingplay I long admired, even when he was turning out for Everton.

"He was also a one-off in our era for being a footballer who loved Joy Division and read the NME. I imagine we should have quite a lot to talk about.”

Festival Director, Professor Greg Lynall, said: “We’re delighted that Pat can take the time to join us at the Liverpool Literary Festival this October and we’re all really looking forward to his discussion with Anthony Quinn.

“Our football focused event will round off a jam-packed Festival which has something for everyone. Make sure you check out our full line up to see all of the authors who’ll be making an appearance between 6th and 8th October!”

The Liverpool Literary Festival takes place 6-8 October at the Victoria Gallery & Museum on Brownlow Hill. To find out more, view the full line-up and reserve your tickets, please visit https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/literary-festival/events/
