A Wirral swimming club is celebrating major success after three of its members became national champions in multiple events, returning home with 10 national medals.
Over two weeks, six members of Metro Swimming Club competed against the top swimmers in Great Britain at the British National Summer Championships and the National English Summer Meet; both events taking place in the prestigious Ponds Forge Pool, Sheffield.
At British Championships, it was 14-year-old Abbie Roscoe who dominated with an overall win of six medals.
She became British Champion in the 800m freestyle and the 400 individual medley; not only winning her age group, but swimming faster than three older age groups in some races.
She also took silver in the 1500m and 400m freestyle, bronze in the 200m fly and 200m individual medley and placed seventh nationally in the 100m fly. Abbie has trained with Wirral Metro since she was nine years old.
At the National English summer meet it was 14-year-old Lily Horton and Petra Varga who secured two Golds and National Champion titles in 400 Individual Medley and 100m breaststroke.
Petra added to those with a silver in 100m IM and bronze for 50m breaststroke.
The team also celebrated personal bests for 17-year-old Tash McDonnell, who despite months fighting back from injury finished 10th in 200 fly and 16-year-old Gia Hothersall, who entered the 200m fly ranked 22nd and finished 17th in her age group.
Reagan Young, 15, also made finals in the 100m and 200m breaststroke finishing in sixth and seventh place. A great achievement for this young swimmer taking part in his first national competition.
Coach Martin Brooks said: "I am super proud that the Wirral program can be so competitive in multiple events.
"It has been two years since the Covid rebuild when Wirral Metro were left with just 18 swimmers and now we are the top female club from the Northwest and Cheshire on the medals table at British Champs.
"This is the first time that we have medalled in every single distance (50m-1500m) and shows the range of training delivered at the club."
Club chair Sarah McDonnell said: "It is a privilege to watch the dedication from the swimmers and coaches at this club.
"It is so impressive to see our swimmers up against the top swimmers in the country bringing medals back to the Wirral.
"This is our most successful year at nationals and we hope that we can continue to keep creating more opportunities for young swimmers on the Wirral to perform at the highest level.
"To have three national champions from such a small club, operating out of Europa Pools is pretty impressive.
