AS a former Royal Marines commando personal trainer Matthew Colligan knows a thing or two about fitness.

And the 42-year-old owner of MCT Fitness has beaten off some healthy competition to take Wirral’s Best for Fitness 2023 title.

Each week, we will be searching for the best Wirral has to offer in different categories.

The Hair, Beauty and Nail Lounge took the first Best of 2023 title – Best for Hair in Wirral – and Pies4U is officially Best for Pies with Ebony J Nails and Beauty being crowned Best for Nails.

The Fox and Hounds is Best for Roast Dinner, Shaker Shaker was announced as Best for Cocktails and Twenty Sixteen is Best For Breakfast.

Voting for Wirral’s Best for Fish and Chips is currently taking place and we’re also looking for nominations in our latest search - Best for Tattoos.

Next up was fitness and Matt Colligan beat off challenges from nine other fitness and gym instructors to take the latest title.

Matthew does his one-to-one personal training sessions and nutrition coaching from his home on Windermere Road and runs SLF (Stronger Leaner Fitter) bootcamp at West Kirby School and College with troop trail conditioning sessions being held at different locations in Wirral.

Matthew opened MCT Fitness in November 2017 and it’s dedicated to promoting an active and healthy lifestyle through group fitness classes and one-to-one personal training and nutrition coaching.

Matthew said: “I’ve always wanted to be my own boss and coach people in my own style.

“I’m a former Royal Marines commando so I wanted to build a troop of people and help them achieve things they never thought they could.

“I value physical health and fitness so I want to help people in this area.

“All group classes are conducted outside as data suggests that outdoor fitness can help you stick with regular physical activity due of the feel-good factor.

“I run the sessions myself so I get to know my clients’ strengths and the areas where they could improve.

“I make every effort to make group training as personal as possible.”

He added: “Personal training and nutrition coaching is done in a private environment which most people prefer.”

But what do Matthew’s clients think about his workout sessions? Why did they think he should take the latest Best of 2023 title?

The range of different classes to suit all abilities and interests are a big hit with one happy client saying “the trail running is a fab group”.

They added: “He really motivates me and pushes me to keep going every week.”

Another said he had “totally transformed my fitness journey”.

Matthew said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw I’d made the shortlist for Wirral’s Best for Fitness 2023.

“I felt so proud and honoured knowing I had so much support in my fitness community.

“And then people took time out their day to actually vote for me to win – that’s just amazing.

“I’d like to thank each and every person who voted – it means so much.”
