CELEBRATIONS for the coronation of King Charles have begun on Wirral with street parties across the borough today.

More than 70 streets have been closed as people celebrate the historic ceremony, which took place earlier this afternoon at Westminster Abbey in London, almost nine months after Charles became King following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen Consort Camilla was also crowned following the main coronation ceremony.

It was the first coronation to take place in the UK in almost 70 years and, for many, a reason to celebrate.

Street parties began today, with more taking place tomorrow and Monday.

Over on St Georges Avenue in Prenton, the party was underway. It was organised by Diane Darlington, who told the Globe: "We like to party in our road and like to join in with the neighbours and get the community together.

"It's our way of celebrating a historic occasion. I watched the coronation, thought it was very emotional. I think Charles will make a good King and Camilla good Queen."

Among those at the street party was Mary Clayton, 69, originally from London.

She told the Globe: "The country needs to have a celebration, because everybody's down and fed up. So this is a nice day.

"My dad won tickets for the Queen's Coronation in 1953 and had seats in the Mall. I feel like my mum and dad are with me to watch Charles' coronation.

"I want to say well done to Charles."

Tables were also being laid for a party on Mostyn Avenue in West Kirby.

It was organised by Sylvia, who told the Globe: "It's just been a lovely excuse to get the community together.

"We really enjoyed it when we did a party for the Jubilee last year, so it was great to be involved again."
