FANCY a three cheese pie with caramelised onions? How about butter chicken curry encased in pastry?

All the pies at Pies4U sound mouth-wateringly delicious and they’re officially the best in Wirral.

Each week, we will be searching for the best Wirral has to offer in different categories.

Last week, The Hair, Beauty and Nail Lounge took the first Best of 2023 title – Best for Hair in Wirral.

We started with Best for Hair and then moved onto Best for Pies and Best for Nails.

Voting for Wirral’s Best for Nails is currently taking place and we’re also looking for nominations in our latest search - Best for Roast Dinner.

Eight tasty pies in Wirral made the shortlist for Best for Pies with Pies4U taking the coveted tile.

Tim Aldcroft, from West Kirby, is the owner of the business, which has been open since 2019.

Together with his partner Claire Wilmin, he started making pies before the Covid-19 pandemic and sold them at the farmers market in Hoylake, changing to home deliveries during local and national lockdowns.

They make their own pastry and all their own fillings from scratch and offer a variety of meat, vegetarian and vegan options each month selling about 200 each time at Heswall farmers market.

Tim said: “Thanks to Karma restaurant in West Kirby we tasted some delicious butter chicken and we decided that the only way it would taste better was if it was in a pie!

“I knew Claire and I could make a pie better than any we could we buy and we just love pies.

“My mum was a cookery lecturer in Oldham and I grew up with proper home cooked food.

“Somebody bought me a small two-pan pie maker – a bit like a toastie maker - and I started making pies.

“From there we got our first pie press and then bought a bigger one during lockdown to do more home deliveries.”

Pies4U is no stranger to winning titles having scooped a gold award for the three cheese and caramelised red onion pie at the British Awards this year and two bronze honours – one for coq au vin and one for steak and stilton.

They also secured a bronze award in 2021 for their chicken curry pie.

Tim said: “I always believe that the effort you put in is reflected in the end result.

“We care about the fillings and the pastry and this shows in the finished pie.”

So, what do the pies actually taste like?

Customers love the “wonderfully flavoured fillings” and “the butter chicken is to die for”.

When Tim heard he’d made the shortlist for Wirral’s Best for Pies 2023 he was surprised and hugely grateful to his customers for nominating the company.

He said: “We’re amazed, surprised and humbled by how many people have supported us from day one and who continue to support now.

“Our customers are our business and it’s lovely seeing people at our stall each month.

“It still feels a bit surreal having won the award but we’re thrilled.”
