WIRRAL Transport Museum has issued an update about when the popular attraction will be reopening.

The Wirral Transport Museum and Tramway, owned by Wirral Council and based on Taylor Street in Birkenhead, announced it would be closing due to circumstances “beyond their control” on April 13.

Posting on social media at the time, the museum said: “Due to circumstances beyond our control, the tramway will not run with immediate effect until further notice.”

A Wirral Council spokesperson confirmed to the Globe that the museum was closing due to "maintenance works".

A spokesperson said: “Wirral Transport Museum and Tramway will be temporarily closed to allow for maintenance works to take place. This is ahead of a scheduled inspection by the Office of Rail and Road next week. It is anticipated that the facilities will reopen following that inspection.”

The news of the closure was met with hundreds of comments from residents that they hoped the museum would open again soon.

Yesterday (Monday, April 24) the museum shared an update on their social media stating that as part of the temporary closure, all the danger signs on the overhead poles have been replaced and renewed.

The attraction confirmed that the work was required for it to reopen.

Posting online, a spokesperson from the museum, said: “Many people have been asking when the Museum and Tramway will be reopening. At present, I'm afraid to say, we just don't know. Apologies for the vague reply to your questioning.

“If you see trams out and about it's because we still need to have driver and guard training sessions and maintenance runs to keep the trams and our platform staff "in ticket". We are not allowed to carry the public on these journeys.

"We will let you know just as soon as we can when this situation changes.”
