A NEW golf simulation centre has opened its doors in Birkenhead.

Dry Golf, based in Woodside Business Park, claims to offer the “most true to life” golf simulation experience allowing golfers to play at any time and in any weather.

Derek Taylor, along with his friends Ben Minton and Ryan Talbot came up with the idea after wanting to offer golf lovers on the peninsula something different.

Derek, from Rock Ferry, told the Globe: “It was always something we had spoken about on and off so after the new year we decided we’d have a crack at it.

“From there we moved into our unit at the business park and got busy building it all.”

The centre offers golfers the chance to play on a 460 square metre indoor putting green powered by Foresight technology. As well as the opportunity for people of any ability to take up golfing lessons.

Derek said: “It feels amazing to be open to the public I’ve been an accountant for the last 20 years and I was so sick of it so to be able to do this full-time is perfect. Me and Ben have been friends since school, and we’ve golfed together over all those years so it’s awesome that we get to do this together.

“We used to work at Port Sunlight driving range when we were teenagers, so we’ve always been members of local golf courses and played golf.”

Speaking of setting up a new business in the cost-of-living crisis, Derek said: “It’s always a little bit scary setting up a new business and we’ve obviously got to cover our finance payments but honestly the amount of interest we’ve received already we’re not worried.

“The simulator business has just exploded in the last 18 months and the technology gap is catching up. Not everyone wants to just go out to the driving range anymore especially if it’s bad weather.

“Wirral has more golf courses than anywhere else in the UK per square mile so the area has always been a bit golf mad and with the British Open being held at Hoylake in July this year we think Wirral is about to go even more nuts about golf.”

He added: “I think between the three of us we’ve probably been members at more than half the courses on the Wirral so it does feel like we know every golfer. We feel as though we owe this experience to the Wirral golfers.”
