A WOMAN, who teaches English to a group of Ukrainian refugees, hosted a Christmas party for them with British traditions.

Abi Williams, 39, of Rock Ferry, began teaching free ESOL classes to Ukrainian refugees earlier in the year to help them learn more English.

After months of classes, and growing closer to the group, she hosted a Christmas party for the 12 women and their children on Tuesday (December, 20).

Speaking to the Globe, she said: "I wanted to put a celebratory event on for them.

"I also wanted to thank them for coming to my lessons."

There was also an appearance from Santa, David Gorman, who dresses as Santa for charity, donating any money he receives to a chosen charity each year.

This year his donations are being given to Macmillan.

Abi also put on a buffet for the group, with lots of traditional British food.

She added: "There was cheese and biscuits, and pigs and blankets, which was all new to them.

"They all loved it, everyone was incredibly grateful."

The group are all Ukrainian refugees who have fled from the war, some leaving partners and most living with hosts in various locations across Wirral.

As this will be their Christmas away from home and in the UK, it will be very different.

Abi said: "I wanted to make it special for them.

"They said they will be celebrating Christmas on the 25th this year, and they think the whole of Ukraine will also be celebrating on the 25th, in support of Britain."
