A NEW community group is distributing free food to help people in Wirral tackle the increasing cost of living.

Wirral Zero Waste Community is helping feed vulnerable households and diverting waste from landfill. So far, they have distributed free food to Windsor Community Centre in New Ferry, Grove Street School in New Ferry, Charlotte Brightside Community Hub in New Brighton, Overchurch Junior School in Upton and Egremont Community Centre in Wallasey.

The group has been set up by volunteers, including Bromborough Labour councillor Sue Percy. It is not a food bank so referrals are not needed.

Cllr Percy says: “We distribute ‘saved’ food that is still good to eat, that’s donated by businesses. Everything is still within its 'use by', but may be over its 'best before' dates. We focus on food dignity, not food poverty, and volunteers help with collections and drop offs.

“Founder Kathryn Bowman’s ethos is about food sharing and community building without which many people would struggle. It’s designed to help people who, in this current climate, might be finding things hard, and helps stop . We want to ensure that there is support for people who need it.

“Between energy prices and rocketing interest rates hitting mortgages and rents, people need help, and we want to do everything we can to support residents through this difficult time.”

Food is available Windsor Close Community Centre on Friday mornings from 10am. For details please see facebook.com/Wirral-Zero-Waste-Community-103090542564263
