EMERGENCY services were called to New Brighton Promenade earlier this afternoon following reports that a man was in the River Mersey.

Video and pictures from Globe reader Jamie Lee Carter show police and firefighters at the scene at around 2.30pm.

Two fire engines and an air ambulance were iin attendance.

Wirral Coastguard, Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire Service were involved in the operation. 

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard told the Globe: "We sent rescue teams from Crosby and Wirral, along with lifeboats from New Brighton, after receiving reports of a person in the water at New Brighton.

"The first call came in at around 1.50pm today.

"A man was passed into the care of the ambulance service."
