UNITED Utilities has confirmed whether it is considering bringing in a hosepipe ban in Wirral.

The firm, which provides water across the north west, say they have ruled out restricted use of hosepipes at present.

Despite the decision, the company is still asking residents to use water “wisely”.

A spokesman for United Utilities told the Globe: “We are not considering any restrictions on use.

“Whatever the weather, we always encourage people to use water wisely.

“This saves energy and money, and it is good for the environment.”

The question on hosepipe bans comes after amber weather warnings for extreme heat were issued in some parts of the region.

The Met Office say the alert has been issued due to a hot spell that will develop across parts of England and Wales later this week, with north west temperatures reaching 30C.

The warning will come into force at midnight tomorrow, Wednesday, and it will remain in place through to midnight on Sunday.

With the latest heatwave coming after months of low rain, which have left the countryside and urban parks and gardens tinder-dry, households in some areas are being urged not to light fires or have barbecues.

Scientists warn that the likelihood of droughts occurring is becoming higher, with two UK water companies announcing hosepipe bans and others warning they may have to follow suit.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), said: “Temperatures will feel very warm again this week, particularly in southern and central parts of the country.

“We want everyone to enjoy the warm weather safely when it arrives, but remember that heat can have a fast impact on health.

“It’s important to ensure that people who are more vulnerable – elderly people who live alone and people with underlying health conditions – are prepared for coping during the hot weather.

“The most important advice is to ensure they stay hydrated, keep cool and take steps to prevent their homes from overheating.”
