POLICE have confirmed they are investigating a suspected arson following a fire at a Wirral primary school. 

Emergency services were called to Somerville Primary School on Northbrook Road in Wallasey at around 4.30pm on Monday to reports that a fire had broken out.

On arrival, firecrews found a wooden gazebo, approximately 4m x 4m and decking alight.

The fire was contained and extinguished. Surrounding houses were also checked to ensure it did not spread.

No one was injured during the incident.

Firefighters were reported to have knocked on a number of doors, asking local residents to keep their windows closed and let them know what was happening. 

The incident has been handed over to Merseyside Police.

A Merseyside Police statement read: "We can confirm that officers are investigating an incident in Poulton following reports of criminal damage in the area.

"At around 5.40pm on Monday, 8 August officers were called to a report of a fire on Northbrook Road.

"Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended and extinguished a gazebo that was on fire outside a classroom at Somerville Primary School.

"Further reports and examinations have established that the fire may have been caused deliberately at present. 

"An investigation is underway and anyone with any information is asked to contact police.
