AN event to celebrate the people of Ukraine will be held in Wirral, featuring a range of stalls, live entertainment and fun for the whole family.

Abi Williams, 39, from Rock Ferry, decided to teach free ESOL classes to Ukrainian refugees earlier in the year to help them learn more English.

The QTS qualified CELTA (ESOL) teacher decided to then put together a celebration day after seeing how many refugees have fled over to the Wirral and its surrounding areas.

Speaking to the Globe, she said: "I just wanted to make them feel welcome which is what the event is about.

"I want them to have a fun day with no worries about anything else. They've got so much going back on at home which is still at the forefront of everybody's mind."

Abi has teamed up with the local BAME community group, Wirral Change, which has agreed to host the event.

Local businesses such as Cake it Easy by Amanda, Borough Road Flowerz by Amy and Chrissy, Lillie's Resins, Yankies Sweets and Treats, face painting by Jackie Nugent and The Life Tree have all come together to support the event.

There will also be handmade Ukrainian gifts and artwork and homemade Ukrainian food on offer.

The event will see donkey rides, a bouncy castle, along with games and activites for all the children with prizes.

Abi added: "Everyone is welcome. It's a community event open to everyone not just refugees."

Deputy Cllr Jean Robinson will also be opening the day on Sunday, August 21 at 12pm.

Wirral Cllr, Janette Williamson, said: "It's an absolute pleasure to support Abi in her Ukrainian Celebration Day on Wirral.

"She has worked tirelessly with the community and local businesses to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for our Ukrainian refugees.

"This event allows Wirral to extend the hand of friendship to our friends from Ukraine and I'm proud of what it represents - a friendly and tolerant Borough.

"Whilst we can only imagine what people have left behind, and the pain that has caused, I'm confident that Wirral will be a place of safety and support for those in need."
