THE sister of the swimmer who went missing in New Brighton has sent a heartfelt message after a body was found at the Pier Head.
Haydn Griffiths, 24, was reported missing on Tuesday, July 19, after he went swimming in the River Mersey at 10.30pm.
It was believed that he was attempting to swim to the windmills north of the Wirral coast.
An extensive search operation was carried out by the RNLI, police, and firefighters, led by the Coastguard.
On Sunday, July 23, police confirmed that a body had been found at 8pm at the Pier Head in Liverpool.
Posting on her Instagram, Haydn’s sister, Megan Griffiths, shared a photograph of the two thanking those who helped her, and her family look for him.
She said: “Haydn’s army stand down.
“Thank you all so much for your love, support, positivity, hope, and determination.
“Haydn’s body has revealed itself. I prefer to think of it as a shell where his soul once lived.
“He was found last night by the pier head in Liverpool. A police statement has been released.
“We cannot thank the RNLI, coastguard, police, and incredible community enough for their support and determination."
Police have confirmed that at this time the death is being treated as unexplained and a post-mortem examination will take place to establish the cause.
The body is yet to be formally identified.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Haydn's family has been informed and are being supported by officers from Merseyside Police at this sad time."
