HOMEMADE scones with jam and clotted cream and loose-leaf tea in China cups with 1950s music playing in the background – Fleur Ashley Tea Room in Wallasey knows how to create the perfect afternoon tea experience.

The traditional tearoom has vintage tablecloths, tiered cakes stands and fine bone China crockery offering the traditional mid afternoon treat to dine in or takeaway and owner Amina Jones and her team are celebrating being named Wirral’s Best for Afternoon Tea 2022.

The venue is the latest winner in our Best of competition taking Wirral’s Best Afternoon Tea crown with a victory in the voting earlier this week.

Each week, we focus on different categories to find the best that Wirral has to offer with awards for hair, nails and beauty being given out as well as fish and chips, pies, pubs and breakfast already decided.

Voting is currently taking place in the latest round of the competition with the award for Best Independent Shop up for grabs with a closing date of midnight on Monday.

Fleur Ashley Tea Room was named Best for Afternoon Tea 2022 and Amina, who opened the establishment nine years ago, couldn’t be happier.

She said: “Everything we do here is traditional and we want our customers to feel nostalgic and like they’re visiting a home from home.

“We have such loyal customers who visit us regularly and we’ve even had visitors from abroad come back and see us because they enjoyed the afternoon tea experience so much.”

Traditional afternoon tea at Fleur Ashley includes six finger sandwiches with a variety of fillings and a slice of quiche followed by two types of cake - chocolate ganache and Victoria sponge – before large freshly baked scones with jam and clotted cream, all served with loose leaf tea or coffee in a cafetiere.

One frequent visitor said: “The scones are to die for and I can never resist another especially when they’re served straight from the oven.

“I love the attention to detail and the overall atmosphere created by the staff.”

Another said: “This is a family-run business with a lovely, friendly atmosphere.

“They have quality food and cater for all allergies, always going the extra mile for people.

“This is an outstanding community spirited tearoom.”

Fleur Ashley Tea Room celebrated the Queen’s platinum jubilee with a special royal-themed afternoon tea throughout the long bank holiday weekend at the beginning of June.

There was also 1950s music playing to help customers get into the spirit of the celebrations and Amina appeared on The Jeremy Vine Show on Channel 5 to talk about the tearoom.
