DO you go for jam first then cream or cream first then jam on top of a scone?

When it comes to afternoon tea, it’s all about the scones and when it comes to scones it’s all about whether you serve them the Cornish way or the Devon way.

The sweet favourites sold at Poppy Rose Tearooms are such a hit with customers that they have just rated the Northwich venue Best for Afternoon Tea 2022.

The Witton Street tearoom is the latest winner in our Best of competition taking Northwich’s Best Afternoon Tea crown with a victory in the voting earlier this week.

Each week, we focus on different categories to find the best that Northwich, Knutsford, Winsford and Middlewich has to offer with awards for hair, nails, beauty and fitness being given out as well as fish and chips, pies, pubs and breakfast already decided.

Voting is currently taking place in the latest round of the competition with the award for Best Independent Shop up for grabs with a closing date of midnight on Monday.

Poppy Rose Vintage Tearoom was named the area’s Best for Afternoon Tea 2022 and owner Poppy August couldn’t be happier.

The 33-year-old opened the tearooms nearly eight years ago after gaining a first-class honours degree in business and hospitality management.

Poppy said: “I always knew I wanted to open some sort of coffee shop or tearoom and it was my mum’s idea to open one here in this old building.
“It was very much a team effort to get the tearoom ready for opening just before Christmas 2014.”

Poppy Rose Tearooms is open Wednesday to Saturday between 10.30am and 4pm with their afternoon tea proving to be a popular choice with customers.

Roast chicken with homemade pesto mayonnaise, cheddar and chutney and egg mayonnaise fill the crustless sandwiches with all dietary requirements catered for.

Poppy and he dedicated team make everything fresh each day and hungry visitors can look forward to orange and passionfruit cake, Biscoff and Bakewell blondies, and peach, almond and raspberry melba slices as well as fruit loaf, which is an afternoon tea tradition.

When it comes to scones, Poppy believes plain ones are the best for afternoon tea but she makes cherry and almond, lemon drizzle and wild garlic and cheddar on a daily basis.

They serve Tiptree raspberry jam and Clotton Hall Dairy clotted cream.

Poppy said: “When our customers told me that our tearooms had made the shortlist, we were delighted.

“We have such a loyal following and our customers supported us through every lockdown.

“We sold thousands of takeaway afternoon teas in boxes!

“I am eternally grateful for the support that small businesses receive as it’s these small businesses that make the town what it is.”
