A Wirral bricklayer will hang a banner over the M53 motorway bridge near Clatterbridge roundabout tonight in protest at rising diesel and petrol prices.

Daniel Rix, from Rock Ferry, will hang his banner over the bridge near Clatterbridge roundabout at 5pm.

The banner reads: 'Get petrol and diesel prices slashed Your (sic) killing the poor F*** the Government'

The father of three is self-employed and works in Nantwich, but says the rising fuel costs are having a real impact.

He told the Globe this morning: "It is getting too much for people now and something needs to be done.

"I work in Nantwich it costs me more over £90 a week to get, that's just under £400 a month.

"It used to cost just over £1 a litre, but now fuel costs are rising all the time and will just keep doing so unless something's done about it.

"I've been self-employed for 10 years and things have never been as bad as they are now, because of the cost of living.

"We shouldn't be in a situation where you fill up, go to work and then see half the tank of petrol has gone."

The average price of diesel is "perilously close" to £2 per litre, motorists have been warned.

Figures from data firm Experian show the average price of a litre of diesel at UK forecourts reached a new high of 197.1p on Tuesday this week.

The average price of petrol was a record 189.3p per litre, which the AA branded "a disgrace".

Twelve months ago the prices were 133.5p for diesel and 131.1p for petrol.

Urging Globe readers to back his campaign, Daniel - who is father to children aged one, four and engaged to partner Becky - continued: "I hope as many people as possible back my campaign tonight.

"It's had more than 600 likes on Facebook, so hopefully it will."
