PUPILS and staff at Wirral school held an art exhibition that raised more than £600 to get urgent life-saving medical aid to Ukraine.

Using the national Ukrainian flower as their inspiration, pupils from all year groups at Oxton St Saviours School created a series of sunflower-themed art and crafts to fundraise for humanitarian charity UK-Med.

The exhibition was attended by parents, pupils, staff and governors.

Pieces on sale included hand-crafted sunflowers, stained-glass art and strings of sunflowers made from recycled CDs.

All proceeds go to UK-Med's Ukraine Appeal which was set-up at the start of the conflict and funds their work to deliver critical medical aid where it is needed most in Ukraine.

The charity, born of the NHS, currently delivers mobile health clinics, surgical care for the war-wounded, civilian first aid training and supports overwhelmed hospitals in central and eastern Ukraine.

The exhibition was organised by teacher Cathy Wilkinson who said: "It was discussed in our staff meeting; our plan was for each year group to complete a piece of art and craft connected to sunflowers.

"These were then displayed in our hall where families could come, view and buy!"

All year groups also collaborated to make an exhibition wall displaying messages of hope to those affected by the Ukraine conflict.

"Oxton St Saviour's are proud to support the important work of UK-Med. The children loved creating their sunflower artwork and then selling it to their parents.

"As always, our school family is very generous, we couldn't do it without them!"

UK-Med’s Interim Director of Fundraising and Communication, Jackie Snell said: "It is only through the generosity and support of schools like Oxton St Saviours that we have been able to send our teams of NHS medics to Ukraine.

"Without funding we would not have got to the people who need our help in the most war-stricken places in Ukraine. UK-Med would like to congratulate the pupils and school on a fantastic event.

"All the money raised will go to our frontline work in Ukraine".
