A TEA room in Wallasey is celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a special menu including a traditional royal-themed afternoon tea throughout the June bank holiday.
Fleur Ashley Tea Room in Wallasey Village has spent the last month getting Jubilee ready by decorating in red, white, and blue including union jacks and life-size cardboard cut out of her majesty herself.
Throughout the bank holiday Amie Jones, who runs the tea room, and her daughter Kelly McWilliam will be serving customers a variety of homemade finger sandwiches, sausage rolls, and freshly baked cakes and scones.
Kelly McWilliam told the Globe: “We’ve discussed celebrating the jubilee at the tea room for about a year now.
“My mum grew up with street parties and around a very British culture so it’s very relevant with the theme of the tea room.”
Those interested in afternoon tea are able to book, walk in, or order for takeaway.
Kelly said: “We looked at what the palace was doing and how they would be celebrating and from that, we created our special menu.
“Mum is making everything from hand. She loves doing it for her it’s all about that community spirit and bringing people together.”
Guests will be able to enjoy cucumber, smoked salmon and cream cheese, and egg and cress finger sandwiches followed by elderflower and lemon cake, strawberry tarts, Victoria sponge, apple pie and custard, and eton mess all hand made by teashop owner Ami.
Amie said: “People don’t seem to make things handmade anymore.
“I feel like it’s something we’ve lost over the years which is a shame, but I am trying to celebrate the jubilee in the traditional way.”
To accompany the special themed afternoon tea the tearoom will also be playing 1950s music to help customers get into the spirit of the celebrations.
Amie said: “The older generation absolutely loves it. We’ve had some people in tears saying it brings back memories.
“It’s so nice to do especially for our older customers as it helps them remember things.”
Kelly added: “Our customer base is majority the older population, so it’s really got them reminiscing about the old times – it gets the whole tea room singing along.
“The other thing that is really nice is the children coming in and learning about what the jubilee is about and why we are celebrating.”
Along with afternoon tea, singalongs, and selfies with the Queen, Fleur Ashley will also be hosting a royal quiz and a raffle prize draw to win a hand-decorated and homemade cake.
Amie said: “It’s something different in comparison to covid and lockdown which have been quite depressing.
“I think people need a boost and something to celebrate and get excited about. Doing this reminds people that we can still get together and have fun.”
