A big-hearted pensioner has donated her entire winter fuel allowance of £300 to a Wirral women and children’s refuge.
The woman, who has asked to remain anonymous, contacted Wirral Labour council leader Janette Williamson and asked her to give her entire Winter Fuel Payment to Wirral Women and Children's Aid.
Domestic violence is an issue Cllr Williamson has worked hard to highlight, becoming Wirral’s 'pledge champion' for domestic abuse reduction in 2016.
“People like this are shining lights in our community, people who show Wirral at its very best. With fuel prices rocketing, it is an incredibly generous and selfless act to give so generously to those families who have suffered domestic abuse.
“I was so touched when I opened an envelope to find the cheque and a letter explaining that she wanted to give her winter fuel allowance those mothers and children who had suffered so much.
“Here in Wirral we take a zero tolerance approach to domestic abuse, and we work closely with organisations such as Wirral Women and Children's Aid, helping wherever we can, including a commitment to exempt them from Council Tax so that every penny that is donated goes straight to helping those who need it most.”
