Parents have been left disappointed after some schools across Wirral have announced they are choosing to record nativities and carol concerts rather than let audiences attend this Christmas.

The decision has been made after Covid cases have been on the rise with many schools being affected.

Due to the uncertainty of the virus, many schools across Wirral have made the decision to cancel their nativity plays all together or have opted virtual or recorded performance as opposed to families attending.

We asked Globe readers over on our Facebook if their child’s nativity had been cancelled or changed due to Covid.

Helen Grimshaw said: “My little boys is being streamed onto the school website. Very disappointed.

“I’m afraid covid is going nowhere. Schools need to adapt to this and think of other ways to allow our children to make memories with their parents watching them in their Xmas play. They have missed out on so much already.”

Caroline Gale added: “The schools need to stop depriving children of events like this and having their families watching them perform.

“School was promoting mental health awareness the other week too. It's a joke, leading the kids to believe they can do a show for their families then take it away from them.

“Filming it is a cop out, not the same as being there. I suggested visitors do a lateral flow test on the day and show a negative result on the way in but it got rejected.

“Also sit in bubbles etc. Seems to be easier for schools to stop family's going in

Schools need to remember that covid isn't going anywhere and they're only putting off the inevitable.

“Meanwhile the kids miss out on important memories and primary school experiences.”

Sam Pemberton posted: “My son in year 4 has his Christmas play Tuesday and we received a text earlier that it was being filmed.

“They never mentioned when it was until that text anyway. I'm assuming my other kids in f2, year 2 and year 5 won't be allowed parents there either.”

Sarah Harper said: “At the minute we are allowed to go and watch as long as we wear masks.”

Nicky Reavy commented: “Our school haven’t cancelled it but no parents are to attend and it will be streamed via a school platform.”

A spokesperson for Wirral Council said: “The safety of children and their families is of paramount importance and schools are currently being advised to risk assess any event they want to hold, to stick to the existing prevention measures and to try to keep numbers as low as possible.

“If there is an alternative way to deliver events schools are being advised to look at those options too.

“For any schools that are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks, they will be advised individually by Wirral’s School Support Team.

“As we have seen over the last 18 months changes to circumstances have come about very quickly at times during the pandemic and the council will be keeping schools updated as more information becomes available.”
