FORMER England and Liverpool footballer John Barnes has been banned from driving after being caught speeding in Cheshire.

The 58-year-old former manager of Tranmere Rovers, from Heswall, who now works as a football commentator and pundit, was found to have been speeding on the A540 Chester High Road on April 7 this year in a BMW.

The road runs between Gordale Garden Centre and the junction with the B5135 that leads down to Parkgate.

Chester Magistrates Court heard on Monday, November 22 that Jamaica-born Barnes, who earned 79 international caps for England, had been travelling at 47mph in a 40mph zone.

The court also heard his driving licence had expired at the time of the offence.

Both offences were found proved using the single justice procedure in August this year.

Barnes was banned from driving for six months, with the disqualification being obligatory due to Barnes's repeat offending.

He was fined £750, ordered to pay prosecution costs of £110 and to pay a £75 surcharge to fund victim services.

There was no separate penalty for driving with an expired licence.
