WIRRAL MPs have paid tribute to Sir David Amess after he was stabbed to death at an open advice surgery for his constituents in Essex.

The Southend West MP was fatally injured at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex at midday on Friday and died at the scene.

A 25-year-old man was arrested immediately at the scene on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

Official sources have said that the man is believed to be a British national with Somali heritage.

Metropolitan Police declared the incident an act of terrorism, with early investigations revealing “a potential motivation linked to Islamist extremism”

South Wirral MP Alison McGovern called for "kindness" following the death of the Conservative MP and recalled the murder of her close friend Jo Cox MP who was killed five years ago at a constituency advice surgery.

She quoted a tweet by Ms Cox's husband, Brendan Cox, which read: "My thoughts and love are with David’s family. They are all that matter now.

"This brings everything back. The pain, the loss, but also how much love the public gave us following the loss of Jo. I hope we can do the same for David now."

Ms McGovern added: "As Brendan says. All love and care to his family. David was a very kind man and let that kindness be the way now."

Mick Whitley, MP for Birkenhead, said: "I am absolutely devastated to learn of Sir David Amess' death. My thoughts at this terrible time are with his family, many friends, and his staff."

MP for Wallasey, Angela Eagle, said: "This is appalling - my thoughts are with his family friends and staff at this most difficult of times MP David Amess dies after being stabbed at constituency surgery.

"It's an attack on our democracy when MPs can be treated in this way for going about their daily job."

Margaret Greenwood, MP for Wirral West, added: "Desperately sad and shocking news about Sir David Amess. My thoughts are with David’s family, friends and his staff at this devastating time."
