NEXT month sees the premier of The Beatles: Get Back – a three-part documentary series directed and produced by Peter Jackson, writes Jamie Bowman.

The series covers the making of the Beatles’ 1970 album Let It Be with its makers claiming it will challenge the longtime assertions that the original project was entirely marked by ill-feeling and that the friendly camaraderie between the Beatles had dissipated.

By that time of course, The Beatles, were a global phenomena, but just ten years previously they were regular visitors to the Wirral peninsula playing long-forgotten venues like the Grosvenor Ballroom in Liscard or Port Sunlight’s Hulme Hall.

We asked readers to send in their memories of seeing The Beatles’ back then before they became the biggest band the world has ever seen.

Eileen Johnston remembers seeing the Fab Four at The Majestic in Birkenhead where they made a total of 17 appearances between June 1962 and April 1963.

“I went to almost all of their appearances at The Majestic,” she said. “I went to the school next door so my friend and I had ‘queuing rights’ from very early morning ensuring front row seats all the time.

“Every show was fabulous and there was a lot of interaction with the audience.”

Thea Hill recalls catching The Beatles in July 1962 at The Tower Ballroom in New Brighton where they played 27 times – more than at any other venue except the Cavern Club.

“We went to see Joe Brown and The Beatles were the support act,” she said. “We were fans of Joe and were not particularly interested in The Beatles.

"However we were all bowled over by Pete Best who may have been a poor drummer but what a looker!”

Steve Molloy, of Irby, meanwhile has a fantastic memory of seeing John, Paul, George and Ringo in Liverpool on his 10th birthday.

“I was at the Liverpool Odeon premier of a Hard Day's Night on July 10 1964 sat in the very front row,” he added. “My mum was friendly with our neighbour Jackie who was married to Paul’s cousin Ian. I assume they were two complimentary tickets that Jackie couldn’t use.

"The Beatles were presented on stage 20ft away and then sat in the circle.

"It was a fantastic birthday gift to say the least!”
