ONLINE creative writing classes to help Wirral children focus on climate change and its impacts are taking place from next week.

Wirral Libraries are working with Read Now Write Now, Literary Arts organisation, and climate change charity, Hope for the Future, to deliver the free sessions throughout September and October.

As part of the classes, children aged seven to 11-years-old, can take part in live online writing workshops and recorded workshops, as well as being able to access learning resources.

During each of session, children will hear about real-life climate change concerns and then be able to write a short story of their own.

Stories will then be shared through social media and displayed in selected local libraries.

All live courses will take place online through Zoom and there will be a maximum of 20 free places on each course with registration on a first come, first served basis.

The live courses will be held for four weeks, from the below dates:

  • Wednesdays, 5pm to 6.30pm starting September 29
  • Thursdays, 5pm to 6.30pm starting September 30
  • Saturdays, 11am to 12.30pm starting October 2

There will also be a live course on Zoom during the October half term from Monday, October 25 to 28 from 10am to 11.30am.

Charlie Lea, from Read Now Write Now, said: "Climate Change is and will be the major issue affecting our world, children and young people are, quite rightly, concerned about the future.

"The aim of this project is to help them write powerful stories which can reach out to everyone and highlight and persuade others what they must do to save our planet so that we can all become true climate champions ourselves."

To coincide with the UN Climate Conference in November, it is hoped that these stories will also be able to be presented at a special event at Liverpool Central Library.

Read Now Write Now were awarded funding from Arts Council England to run these classes.
