MORE than 30 flats could replace a former Wirral fire station after a previous proposal failed to get off the ground.

West Kirby Fire Station closed in 2016, with a replacement in Saughall Massie opening in 2019.

Plans to convert the West Kirby building into office and retail space were approved last year.

Despite the proposal gaining the approval of Wirral Council, it was never delivered.

Now, Blueoak Estates has put forward plans for 32 new flats, with sizes ranging from one bedroom to three bedrooms.

The company said most of the development would be four-and-a-half storeys high with an environmentally friendly roof.

The West Kirby scheme would also include parking spaces, electric vehicle charging points and space for bicycles.

Blueoak Estates believe the project will help to meet housing demand in the area and reduce pressure to build on green spaces.

The developer has written to those living near to the site, asking for their opinions on the project.

Of the 32 flats, six of them will be either shared ownership or affordable rent homes, with priority to be given to young people.

A spokesperson for Blueoak Estates said: "Engaging with the local community is a fundamental part of our role as an inclusive developer and Blueoak Estates is always open to feedback on our proposed schemes.

"The redundant land at the former West Kirby Fire Station not only offers a great opportunity to utilise an existing brownfield site and deliver much-needed housing but also [acts] as a catalyst for urban regeneration within West Kirby town centre."

“The overall feedback from the public has been very positive and encouraging, with the application now submitted.”
